Of course, keywords have essentially impact on page position in SERPs. Without quality keyword rich content it's more harder to achieve high SE ranking ;)

Aussie,
Start with the following:

1)Pick a "title" tag for your site that includes the search term that you would like to rank well for. I you if you are selling used cars in Australia (for example), you may want to choose a Title such as this:
"Australia used car inventory"
or
"Used cars in Australia"

Note: Before you decide on what your target search term is, you need to figure out what terms generate good traffic. Here's a free tool that estimates how much traffic per day a given search term generates:

Play around with this tool and figure out which generate a lot of traffic but aren't too competative. The key is to find a happy medium between traffic and competition.

Try not to target more than 2 or 3 search terms with your title tag. My advice would be to pick 1 or 2 target terms and include those terms in your title tag.

Once you've done that, come back here and let us take a look at it. We'll all try to offer advice and then move on to some other important places to include keywords (alt. tags, h1 tags, body, etc...).
