How did you guys do? I didn't really have too many changes. Just got more PR on some inside pages.

Some up...some down...I did get a PR 7 for this forum though. That was kind of cool!

PR updates just don't have the aura that they used to have. Maybe it's because I've finally learned that PR has nothing to do with rankings!

I dont understand the great interest in the page rank update. It really means little unless you're selling links and an increase in PR seems to be used as a means to drain more cash out of unsuspecting punters. PR on the toolbar is already months out of date when it is updated on the toolbar. PR as a concept has been abused consistently and as such is of consistently less importance. The spread of links as an indicator of popularity is far more important than the PR of the links developed.

two quick points:

1)you got hit the nail on the head...people are still interested in visual PR because it is still the main price indicator for text links. It shouldn't be, but it is, so until that is no longer the case text link advertisers (buyers and sellers) will be interested in PR updates.

2)PR is not typically "months" out of date. It is usually 1 to 6 weeks out of date. I'm still trying to figure out the lag on this one (Hugo, help me out on this one)

So the market demand is still there.

I recently received an unsolicited email from a webmaster that "loved" my website and would like to exchange links, however he felt that he could not do so at present because the PR of my pages was low. However should my pages reach PR 5 I was to inform him by email and at that point he would exchange links.

I receive many weird and wonderful emails every day, but this idiot made my jaw drop. Unfortunately PR is still seen by some as a highly valued resource and they go about seeking links from high PR pages rather than from relevant content on established sites.

In all likelihood a good link would come from is a new page (fresh relevant content), on a well established related site. This type of page could well be PR0 (toolbar PR) because of its freshness. Real PR is costantly being updated, although it is not reflected in the toolbar, so a page could have substatial PR that is not reflected in the toolbar.

Links gained naturally will come from a wide range of PR's and point to a wide range of PR's. If every page on a site is PR4 and above and every link to it is from a PR4 and above (i.e. no links from or to fresh content) it could be an indication of stale content linking to stale content.

The link request, if you can call it that, came from a link management company who were representing a casino site. My site is an SEO training site!

From what I can find out, the joys of research, the profile of the links into a site has been analysed by Google for a while now. An unnatural profile, i.e. having just high page rank links, is likely to damage the particular domain as having only high page rank links will trigger a spam filter. A natural link profile would have lots of low/medium page rank links and a few higher ones. So maybe PR aint dead its just useful for detecting Spammers.

Not sure how long the lag was on this one, frankly. But I've read reports of brand new sites receiving some PR even though they weren't activated (and did not have backlinks) until about 10 days prior to the update. Don't quote me on that though. I'll see if I can get a more definitive answer....
