My sources tell me that keyword related domains have about as much influence as the "keyword" metatag (not much). I can't really verify that because I don't have any of those types of domains.
Even though I have seen many of those types of domains rank well for specific key phrases, that doesn't necessarily mean that their ranking is in anyway related to their URL.
Optimized inbound links account for 50% to 90% of search engine ranking anyhow, so I would focus on that if I were you.

Sometimes they very well help to achieve good ranking, especially in high competitive areas, such as http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=gambling

You are making the mistake of attributing those site's rankings to the fact that they contain gambling in their url. There are many other variables that affect the ranking of those sites (namely backlinks). The fact that the urls contain the word gambling is merely coincidental. It is not the reason that they are ranked in the top 10.
To illustrate this point, take a look at the sites that are ranked 800-810 in google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=gambling&num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&start=900&sa=N
Most of those sites also contain the word gambling in their url. Why do they rank so much lower than those sites in the top 10? In a word...backlinks.
If keyword in the url was a major factor, those sites should rank much higher.
