Flash is a great type of design. Looks great, but there are three key statistics that I found to be pretty useful and you should take into consideration before choosing to have a flash site instead of a clean simple html site. The results from a Jupiter Media Metrix study, released in September, point to some interesting tidbits:
Only 20% of respondents would visit a site more often if it had rich media enhancements.
40% of respondents would visit a site more often if the pages would load faster.
59% of retail shoppers wanted more product information, which leads to more text on the page.
All in all, if you are looking to optimize your site and get high rankings throughout the search engines, you can accomplish that much easier by having a nice, simple, clean, full of meaty content html page. Good Luck with your project.

I agree with Eggert.
I design sites all day. This is what I do for a living. Flash is exactly what it is..."flashy" expensive and fun to look at. However, in the search engine world it is highly ineffective.
Without a doubt, if you want to optimize a site, you need your "(HTML) meat & potatoes." However, don't get discouraged.
You can have the best of both worlds! The bulk of your pages could be HTML with a enough flash no make a new-age impression.
Take a look at www.rlinedesign.com home page. In addition, take a look at their portfolio page. They distribute flash throughout the site making it effective in both worlds.
