Yahoo is officially the "old man" of search engines. The trailblazing portal and search engine is getting set to celebrate it's ten year anniversary. Co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo parlayed Yahoo Inc. from a college hobby into a full-time job nearly one decade ago. What separated Yahoo from the rest of the crowd (in the early days) was their desire to create a profitable business as quickly as possible. This went against the norm back in the pre-bubble burst years. This "make money now" philosophy allowed Yahoo to earn a profit in less than 10 months of existence, and also fueled the Sunnyvale based company's resounding comeback from the dot-com bust that obliterated hundreds of other Internet portals. When asked about this, Jerry Yang had this to say: "We have always built the company around profitability. "When we're not profitable, it's terrible." Recently, Yahoo seems to have fallen behind it's two main competitors in the search engine market (Google & MSN) in terms of technology. However, it's every expanding product line has continued to flourish. They continue to offer unique products and services to consumers and business, and these offerings have helped them to remain profitable in a highly competitive environment. Among products of note are their music service "LaunchCast", and their Small business hosting & web design services contained within "Yahoo! Small Business" I wouldn't be surprised to see Yahoo still alive at kicking at the ripe old age of......20! By the way, Yahoo is inviting all of its registered users in the U.S. to download a coupon for a free scoop of ice cream on March 2nd from Baskin Robbins in celebration of its 10th anniversary.
