The new year is upon us, with Google still at the summit of the search engine mountain, MSN making waves with their new algorithm, and Yahoo...well...I guess there is not much to report from them right now is there? It seems as if Yahoo has lost focus in terms of organic search. While other sectors of their site are being continually developed and re-developed (Yahoo E-mail anyone?), it seems as if they are neglecting the search engine itself. Yahoo broke away from the Google algorithm in February of 2004. Then Google unveiled daily SERPs adjustment in the spring of 2004. Finally, MSN unveiled their new search algorithm in late 2004. Based on this trend, it should be Yahoo's turn to make a big move in the organic search sector, but that just has not happened (I refuse to count video search as a "big move"). Maybe Yahoo is keeping things quiet as they approach some big announcement regarding organic search, but in the meantime, Google is staying at the top of the heap and MSN is gradually taking a larger chunk of the market share. For starters, Yahoo should be taking steps to mimic Google's daily SERPs fluctuations. They should also work to improve the relevancy of longer query strings. As interenet users become more sophisticated (using 3 words or more peforming a search) it is important that a leading search portal such as Yahoo maintain a high level of relevancy for these longer queries.Yahoo is still a big boy in search, but they need to make sure to keep pace with the 800 pound gorilla (Google) and the new kid on the block (MSN).Just my two cents though...
